Film Magazine Analysis - Little White Lies

The name of this magazine is Little White Lies, it is possibly called this due its content of biased reviewers giving their true opinions on their take of a certain movie, which then translate into little white lie as their true opinions are depicted as 'white lies'.

This issue of Little White Lies has no sell lines, this goes against the conventions of a magazine cover showing that they want to stand out and be different from other film magazines by focusing the customers attention more so on the creative artwork designs. Here on this cover it features a fine line drawing that experiments with a range of mark making presented through a close up shot of Forrest Bondurant in Lawless played by actor Tom Hardy. Along with a plain black and grey scaled dusty coloured theme which is representative of the time period where everything was very much black and white it was either right or wrong, there was no in between. This depicts the genre Gangster drama story perfectly.

Little White Lies is an independent publisher and design agency which was founded by Danny Miller and Matt Bochenski who were both involved in working at ADRENALIN magazine ( which then closed in 2005 ) as well as working at Little White Lies as a little side project which then projected as they placed it under their new company - Church of London.

This magazine is aimed at a much more younger demographic clearly emulated through the magazines design and content that is artistically modern which revolves around featuring films that are current. Future showing that they are aimed towards young avid film fans who are interested in a current movie which is in cinemas and wants to learn more in depth about it. Their mission statement as a magazine is " Truth & Movies " which again revolves around the idea of delving into the movie and the truthful (biased) opinion of a reviewer. Which changes with every magazine as the feature film does along with it to.But specifically for this magazine the feature film Lawless was depicted through the magazine as a rough housed - stereotypical 'manly' movie which then constructed roles and attitudes for its target audience throughout it pages.Where they included advertisement such as beer which is stereotyped as a masculine item, establishing that their target audience for this magazine were targeted towards young male audience indicated by gender stereotypes.

Film Magazine Analysis - Empire

Empire

The name of the magazine is Empire, and empire means a group or state ruled by a monarchy and in this case its the film industry that represents the monarchy. Thus its slogan ' The worlds biggest movie magazine'.

The sell lines are placed on the left hand side of the front cover allowing the main image of Brad Pitt to dominate the page more so on the right hand side. Here he is holding a knife up to us along with his head tilted up looking at us smugly, allowing us to see the huge slash scar across his neck whilst wearing an all black outfit. The knife connotes a sense of threat, danger and violence towards the audience making them possibly feel intimidated. As well as due to the long slash scar across his neck it denotes that his been involved in violent interactions giving of a sense of toughness future expressed by his firm intimidating facial expression. Future more his clothing is fully black connoting a sense of mystery. These themes are all run through the colour scheme such as the reds ( danger ), greys , blacks and whites creating an atmosphere of grittiness along with it. Which ties in perfectly with the sell lines that feature mainly actions packed movies full of fighting and violence such as ' Expandables' and ' Public enemies'.

Empire magazine features include famous actors such as Daniel Radcliff, Brad Pitt(as seen on the front cover) and Anna Friel interviewing them about any possible up and coming movies they're in as well as their journey as actors and what its like to work in such a demanding competitive ever changing industry, with them then stating their views and opinions on such topics. This establishes that the target audience are more interested in the lifestyle and private life of celebrities. That is a magazine that is very gender neutral and not constructed on one gender, although men are the predominantly the readers of this magazine.

New ways of researching audiences in distribution - The girl with the dragon tattoo / Technical analysis of how the poster targets the audience

Who is the audience for the film?
The audience for the movie ' The girl with the dragon tattoo ' is predominantly females aged over 20, who are also casual consumers of small games and mini puzzles.

What went well with the marketing campaign ?
There were various elements of the campaign that went well, one of which was using their digital innovation award on using social media platforms to campaign their markets such as launching their trailer on Yahoo allowing them to achieve 65,000 trailer views and cause a huge hype which triggered a large amount of goggle searches to take place.

Even better if/ what did not work ?
They launched a competition for the biggest ' super-fan' of the movie where the user who shared the most content to the most people got the chance to win their own pre-release private screening of the movie. But this eventually backfired on them as a pre-paid screening provided to be too much effort for the audience, causing to to generate a fail in interest.

This poster is based on the Swedish version of "The girl with the dragon tattoo" where their target audience is predominately females in their 20s who like to play games and mini puzzles. Within this their reaching out to their target audience through this poster which is seen by the main female protagonist with the golden shoot of the photo placement their for establishing that she is the main focus and therefore the story revolves around her.

Film Website Analysis - The Maze Runner

As soon as you enter the film website for The Maze Runner your presented with partnered sponsorships such as 'Yahoo Movies' and 'Fandango' advertisement for ticket buyers, and once you've ex'd that it takes you straight into the trailer allowing customers who know of the movie or don't a  chance to see what the movie is about. And if the customers have still yet not been informed well of what happens in the movie they have tabs above the page such as , 'About' giving us a brief synopsis as well as character list , 'Videos' which features the second trailer , 'Gallery and Characters' which are a series of cadet shots from the movie along with separate profiles of the characters. But I my favourite part of this website is the tab labeled 'WCKD' which intertextualities with the main body of this film, where a mysterious organization known as W.C.K.D look out onto these characters within their habitats in which they trapped them in and keep a close eye on their activity through a bird eye view camera visualised as spy lenses (as seen in the movie). Which is exactly how that page has been set up to visually represent, allowing the the customer to feel as if they are a member of 'WCKD'. Allowing them the ability to locate the characters through that birds eye view as well as sneak a preview of some  characters files and personal information.

Within the top right hand corner of the page it allows us to select the country the customer is from allowing it to be advertised to a world wide audience as well as promoting the social media platforms that they use such as twitter , Facebook and instagram allowing future social media promotion for the movie.

Repertoire of elements + Christian Metz's genre theory

A repertoire of elements are the key features that are repeated throughout a certain genre. Each genre has its own specific repertoire of elements, which help to distinguish it from other genres. They all come under these categories:

Iconography : Different genres of films contain different visual as well as audio images  that become iconic and recognisable with the genre. For instance Icons for the Western genre of films includes ten gallon hats, spurs, horses, saloons, guns, jails, and the badge of the sheriff.
Style : Refers to the way in which the items in iconography are presented, such as camera angles, editing lighting as well as the use of colour.
Settings: Genres has a distinct location as well as time period. ( e.g horror - dark places such as isolated houses and forests )
Narrative : this refers to the story structure as well as specific narrative devices, which genre employ. Narrative theories explain the underlying structure, which inform the way audiences make meaning from narratives
Characters : Narrative is usually developed through characters and their functions. Some characters are so closely associated with genre that they become generic types. ( e.g horror - demons, monsters, killers and creepy children )

Christian Metz's genre theory

Christian Metz was born in 1931 and died 1993. He was a French Film Theorist who is renowned for his genre characteristics theory. During the 1970's his work had a great impact of film theory in France, Britain and the United States. Metz’s claims there are reoccurring expectations where there are 4 development stages that can be applied to a genre :

  • Classical-structuring on narrative, mainly victorious/define era.  (e.g  Dracula - 1931 )
  • Experimental-This is where the genre is established and experiments which different sceneries and scenarios. ( e.g scream )
  • Parody- Conventions have been reformed where thriller scenes and movies incorporated comedic effects watering down expectations of the film. ( scary movie 4 )
  • Deconstruction- Where other genres elements and sub genre's are introduced. The thriller genre has now evolved into a stage where hybrids are evident. The thriller has now fused with several other genre creating sub-categories the most established being sci-fi/thriller or horror/thriller hybrids. ( e.g - The sixth sense )

Analysis of film Trailer - The Equalizer

Within the beginning of the trailer we are instantly told that it is set in America signified by the establishing shot of the iconic Brooklyn Bridge during the evening creating a very chilled city vibe. It then transitions into a close up shot of a book called " The old man and the sea" which we soon find out plays part of an extended metaphor in which Denzel Washington uses to tell his 'past ' story through out this whole trailer through voice overs. But another important part of the beginning of the trailer is that within the shot Denzel we are introduced to a stereotype of a prostitute who is a teenage girl dressed in a  skimpy tight short dress and black fringed wig all this black connotes sexiness as well a mysteriousness. This is important as Denzel decides to tell her about his past and seems to want to hide it from someone else, we soon find out she plays an important part of the movie. This story about his past is a bit of a mystery ,which is the selling point of the movie as the audience is left with the question of who he was in his past and why he has tried to change from being that person, was he a former FBI ? ex-cop ? criminal? possibly an undercover agent ?.The question of his past identity is further cryptic throughout the whole trailer not once was his characters name mentioned at all, again leaving us with a missing puzzle piece of his identity.

It starts of at a fairly steady pace and stays steady through the begging where we see his character works at a home de-po established by all the crater carts, stoking shelves as well as uniform which states 'home mart', there fore the audience is left with am impression of a normal everyday working guy. Until we see a crime take place within his workforce where him and one of his employs are robbed from at the till, the robber takes this women's ring which sis extremely important to her as she stresses to the robber its her grandmothers ring. After this we see multiple close up shots of Denzels pensive facial expression which we see multiple times through out and each time within the next scene of this there is actions scenes taking place. More over throughout the trailer there are multiple close up shots of weapons and as well as exaggerate diagetic sounds of gun shots or guns being reload infers as if Denzel has this special sense of being able to have an instinct that magnify his awareness of these things but also the pace starts to pick up.

It is clear that the target audience is aimed at adults as well as young adults as its got a lot of violence and acting establishing its genres are action and thriller. More over mainly for adults who are fans of Denzel Washington, a well known prestigious american actor who will appeal to a older crowd due to his iconic action packed characters in previous movies, which is why his name is the only on that appears in the inter-titles.The music really starts to pick up from the middle fighting scene where they start to play a song sang by Eminem and Sia, were nearing to the end one of the ending lyrics are " its too late to start over ", these words are forced upon Denzels current situation.

Film Posters : How Train Spotting became famous + 127 Hours

Within the process of creating the poster the initial stages included in  the  brainstorm had ideas that went back and forth such as' deliberately amateurish snaps and photo booth shots, and of using train windows as frames for the individual portraits'. But instead they settled for a simple poster which was recognized by the D&AD ( design and art direction) that believed despite its visual simplicity and immediacy , its core strength lies in its powerful ambiguity.

127 HOURS
This is one of many film posters which caught my attention due to its visual meaning as well as its interpreted one. Its obvious visual front shows a small James Franco entrapped between two massive engulfing boulders within an awkward position to withstand himself from falling down, onto what is a much smaller boulder. Where as on the other hand you can interpret the image to represent an hourglass which the outline of the two boulders create where James Franco is stuck in time as the grain of sand (tiny boulder) trapped between the two boulders prolonging entrapment time, which again signifyshow time is an important element to the movies hence " 127 hours".

Spider-Man film trailer analysis

Through out the whole movie trailer there was no showing of the directors/ producers and more importantly the stars of the movie, this is because they wanted the audience to immerse themselves into a sense of realness towards the characters and not think of them as actors, especially as this movie has a wide target audience which includes young kids allowing their imagination to believe in the characters. The use of music throughout created a tense and dramatic atmosphere at times as well as typical ' hero ' music initiated Spider-mans heroic actions within the quick montages of clips. Also there was a huge amount of dietetic sounds being used through out such as helicopters , explosions a gunshots to establish this violence / action which is a big part of the movie  possibly creating an adrenaline rush or excitement through the audience. More over , this is even more exciting as it takes place within the huge city that is New York there for we get to see the busy streets filled with hundreds of people and vehicles, but the attention is taken away from the busy city and kept on the two main characters throughout the trailer as they drown out the dietetic sounds of a busy city and just zone in on the two characters there, allowing the audience to have their full attention on the two characters. Throughout there was a montage of different voices used for the voice over.
